The Good Spa Spies are a team of committed, professional journalists at The Good Spa Guide who are passionate about all things spa. From Jacuzzis to gymnasia, massage to mud wraps, there is nothing we won’t do to find the pinnacle of pampering perfection.
Behind the scenes with the Good Spa Spies is our blog, here to gather even more tit-bits from the world of spa, beauty and well-being – from the everyday to the weird and wonderful.
Now, without further ado, let us introduce the Good Spa Spies:
Sassy Spy
You can always rely on Sassy Spy to cut to the chase. When it comes to spa, there’s no sugar coating. Sassy ensures no stone is unturned in her mission to find the perfect spa experience:
“Now I’m in my 30s I’m all about the luxury! I love fluffy towels, decadent candles and natural light. A therapist with cigarette-breath, and being walked in on during a treatment are definitely my spa-hates!”
Sedate Spy
Sedate Spy craves peace and quiet. You don’t often get it at GSG HQ, but Sedate can always find a peaceful spot at a good spa:
“Hydration is my bugbear. Leave me water-less and you’ll leave me unhappy. However, ply me with ice-cold water and a silent relaxation room and I’ll be your spa pal for life.”
Shy Spy
Small but perfectly formed, Shy Spy loves a challenge. From Watsu to a fish pedicure, Shy Spy will try anything once. She’s not an exhibitionist and likes her spa to be neat and discreet, but she’s not too bashful to try the weird and wonderful spa treatments on offer.
“A seamless spa experience really is important to me. I feel terribly self-conscious if I have to walk past besuited business men in just my robe!”
Single Spy
One of the founders of The Good Spa Guide, Single Spy is a font of spa knowledge. We all know that if we have a question, Single Spy will be on hand to help.
“I am not interested in hard-sell when it comes to a spa experience. Therapists who use treatment time to write up a list of ‘recommendations’ in the hope I’ll buy products leave me distinctly unrelaxed. Massage, attention to detail and delicious scents will soon soothe me, though. I like to be warm at all times when I am spa-ing (well, apart from in an ice cave!) From cold floors to flimsy coverings on massage tables, being chilly doesn’t make for a relaxing spa experience.”
Student Spy
Here to ensure we stay down-with-the-kids, hip, cool and ever-so-trendy, Student Spy is our youngest member.
“Fitting in a spa day or stay around my studies is fantastic! It gives me the perfect opportunity to relax and take my mind off essays!
I love a friendly therapist, and having some decent music to listen to during a treatment. However, when it comes to spa dislikes, it has to be robes that are too big for someone who is five foot nothing!”
Stylish Spy
Astounding the other Spies with her eclectic wardrobe and seemingly endless collection of handbags, coats and shoes, Stylish Spy is all about the décor. If your feng shui is out or there’s mould to be found, Stylish is bound to be the first to notice.
“I’m quite new to the world of spa, and am still finding my feet. I’m pretty fearless, so I’m up for trying whatever the Good Spa Guide wants to throw at me!”
Suave Spy
Our singular male spy, Suave Spy ensures we don’t neglect all things male. Suave is always on hand to try whatever treatment, product or experience is reserved as “Just for Men” (although his hair colour is all his own, you understand.)
“I am a man who knows exactly what I want. When it comes to the world of spa, I like truly great treatments and flawless customer service. To top it all off, I like to be greeted well and seen off in style. If I feel I’m missing out on the proper theatrics of a spa experience, I leave disappointed.”
Sweet Spy
Ensuring that any every customer calling is greeted with a smile is Sweet Spy. We love her sunny disposition, even when the sea mist has encased our offices for a week!
“As a young mum, it’s important to find time to yourself. I adore nothing more than an empty swimming pool, and, as I’m usually on a budget, good value-for-money is high on my list of spa-likes, too! I can’t abide being cold, and as I’m always rushing around, I simply hate being kept waiting for a treatment.”
Sybaritic Spy
Luxury, luxury, luxury. As the other founding member of The Good Spa Guide, Sybaritic has had more spa experiences in the last few years than most people have in a lifetime. If you want to know about spa, she is the woman to talk to.
“Spa to me is synonymous with sensuality. I want to hear, smell, feel and experience everything – so it all has to be perfect! Fragrances to intoxicate, warm treatment beds and unexpected treats make me happy. Black mould, sniffing therapists and people who do not take my lavender allergy seriously do not!”

Hello,
I am from Health & Fitness Magazine and we are re-vamping our magazine to include a spa section. We want to have a ‘spa expert’ who can give tips and comments for our readers. I am interested in – The Good Spa Guide 2010: Best Spa Guides in Britain and was wondering if I could receive the contact information for Anna McGrail, the writer.
I would greatly appreciate this.
Thank you,
Brittany Nelson
